Nervous flyer? 8 ways to calm your pre-flight anxiety

It’s the moment you’ve been waiting for all year. You’re finally about to jet off on holiday! But, if like us, the thought of travelling at 35,000 feet sends your head into a bit of a spin, don’t panic. There are ways to calm your racing mind and look forward to your long-awaited week of sun, sea and sand

We asked the experts at Airport Parking – who are no strangers to flying – for some of their top tips.

They also revealed to us that Google searches for “Airport Anxiety” had risen by 208% in the last month, so you’re certainly not alone. The fear is real!

“When it comes to staying calm whilst travelling, it’s crucial to remember that feeling nervous or stressed in such environments is entirely normal,” says travel and transport expert Andrew Chambers.

“It’s important to try and stay calm, plan ahead, arrive early, and utilise technology for a smoother experience.

“Engaging in deep breathing exercises, seeking support, and visualising positive outcomes can also greatly alleviate stress.

“Remember, you are not alone in these feelings and, with the right strategies, you can navigate the airport environment with ease and confidence, making your travel experience truly enjoyable.”

Did you know?

A fear of flying is called aviophobia and often stems from another fear, such as being in an enclosed space (claustrophobia), crowds (enochlophobia), heights (acrophobia), or hijacking or terrorism.

Flying remains one of the safest ways to travel and is significantly safer than driving a car.

Nevertheless, it can be a major source of stress and anxiety for some people.

8 tips to help you stay calm while travelling

Plan ahead: Research airport layout, security procedures, and travel restrictions to reduce uncertainty and stress.

Arrive early: Allow extra time for check-in, security, and finding your gate to avoid rushing and unexpected delays.

Utilise technology: Download airline and travel apps for real-time flight updates and gate changes.

Breathing techniques: Practise deep breathing exercises or meditation to calm your nerves and reduce anxiety during the airport experience.

Entertainment: Bring along your favourite book, music, or download movies on your device to keep yourself occupied and distracted during waiting times.

Stay hydrated and nourished: Dehydration can exacerbate anxiety, so be sure to drink plenty of water. Also, choose nutritious snacks to maintain energy levels and enhance your mood.

Seek support: Share your concerns with a travel companion or from airport personnel if needed. Remember, you are not alone, and many people experience similar worries.

Visualise a positive experience: Picture a smooth and enjoyable journey in your mind. Positive visualisation can have a powerful impact on your mindset and overall experience.
